Glynn Snodin replaced Micky Adams at Left Back and John Pearson came on for Bob Taylor at Inside Left. Peter Swan, John Stiles, and Ronnie Sinclair were the unused substitutes for Leeds. The Forest goals were scored by Franz Carr after seven minutes, Stuart Pearce, a penalty, after fifteen minutes and Gary Parker in the thirty-first minute. Gary Aplin of Kendal was the referee. The Tournament was held at Wembley Stadium in commemoration of the centenary of the forming of the Football League. It was played between sixteen clubs from all Divisions of the Football League. There were eight from Division One, four from Division Two and two each from Divisions Three and Four. Qualification was for those teams in each Division who performed the best in the fifteen League fixtures between the beginning of November 1987 and the end of February 1988. Leeds qualified third in Division Two, after Blackburn Rovers and Aston Villa. Due to the number of games needed to be played, in Rounds One and Two the games were twenty minutes each way and the Semi-Finals and Finals were thirty minutes each way. While 40,000 attended over the two days, it was thought that 20,000 would have been the maximum for any one game. After eliminating Leeds, Forest went on to win the trophy defeating Sheffield Wednesday in the final 3-2 on penalties after the game had been goalless at full-time.
